If you want to install a 64bit OS, I highly recommend win7 64bit instead of anything previous. It is very stable and runs most applications w/o issue.
That said, your machine must be 64bit compatible. Check the manufacturers' website. There is a compatibility checker on Microsoft.com as well. Make sure you have at least 4GIG RAM - the more the better. Most laptops prior to last year could handle no more than 4GIG max. Anything less I'd stick to a 32bit OS.
