I have a compaq whose original windows xp license key has the license key and then that exact phrase "1-2CPU HPO"
It was windows xp (no support pack). I had to install it in that order as well: windows xp, sp1, sp2, sp3. Do they have the original restore disk by any chance? Or a partition with the restore on it? If not, usually you can use a standard windows xp install image and then just enter a valid license key. You should be able to find out the exact version of xp by looking up in the service tag# on the machine at the HP or Compaq support site (if HP or compaq machine). Then install that version.
