I always put the field on the left side, because it used to be this way in earlier versions, but the help file (VFP 6 in this case) states:

"A basic optimizable expression takes one of the two following forms:

eIndex relOp eExp

-or-

eExpr relOp eIndex"

Therefore, it's either a bug in the product, or a bug in the documentation, I vote for the first one. But it could be related to your use of the SQL engine. SQL's Rushmore behaves differently in a number of way compared to xBase's Rushmore. Perhaps, the above is only valid for the xBase Engine.
