I apologize to all for my crabbiness lately. As often works, music sent it packing.

Just now it was the Allman Brothers. Especially Duane. They were sons of the south who started a movement, southern boogie, based on a white interpretation of the blues. He could play with the best of the black guitarists and was in demand as a session player. Sadly, he died at the age of 24 in a motorcycle accident.

His everlasting contribution was his guitar work on the Layla album. That was a meeting of the guitar gods. Eric Clapton, perhaps tired of the Clapton Is God stuff, purposefully took a step halfway out of the limelight and invited a co-guitarist who could hold his own. The result was beyond beautiful.

The story goes that Eric heard about Duane and showed up unannounced at an Allman Brothers concert. He was recognized and led backstage. Duane looked back in mid solo and saw Eric Clapton watching him play, hands across his knees. Can you imagine?

If you never listen to any other rock albums, listen to these. The first is desert island music and the others are about as good.

"Layla", Derek and the Dominos.
"Live at Fillmore East", the Allman Brothers
"Eat a Peach" the Allman Brothers
