As to telling the difference, that's beside the point - in my humble opinion, that is.
I hesitate to say all, but for the majority of my users the concept of null as in "we don't know 'cause nobody bothered to check" translates into "and we don't care".
But the white color sure does annoy 'em.
What display settings would that be?
