My first programming language used [ ] for arrays and I have always used them for that. Perhaps it's just what I am used to, but using parens as array delilmiters made no sense -- you can't visually differentiate between an array value or a function call. Because [ ] can (should???) be used as array reference, it always takes me a little extra to recognize when they are being used as string delimiters. It strikes me as somehow "wrong" when I see them and the only time I use them as string delimiters is when I need to embed both ' and " inside the string. (I'll grant this is a personal preference and that using them when you want to embed either ' or " might be more readable.)
