Asking for it and being required (by any law) to produce it though are two different things. Regardless, it is not difficult for any officer of the law to come up with a reasonable reason for asking you to produce i.d. of some type if they want to. Most officers are performing their jobs to the best of their ability though and not out to abuse their position. In the cases of those who do, there are laws for that too.

Yes, I was conflating "asking for" with "being required to produce." Of course, the cop can ask. But except in limited circumstances, I can say "no" with no legal ramifications.
