Now here is a really good analogy, not necessarily a direct reply to your post. Lately on the train I have been reading "Too Big to Fail," an inside account of the financial crisis two years ago. It reads like a novel. The guy who made the analogy was Jamie Dimon, the head of JP Morgan/Chase. His firm was among the healthier ones left standing but he was nonetheless hauled before Congress by chest beating posers. They specifically wanted to know why he was able to buy Bear Stearns for such a low price. "Buying a house is not the same thing as buying a house on fire," Dimon said.

>And that is exactly why it is illogical to automatically give citizenship to any baby born in the USA. There are so many obvious problems with it I was frankly astounded the first time I realized that was in fact the way it works. One would not even have to come in illegally. Get a tourist visa and stay til the baby is born.

>>And previously they did not deport the parents. That is why we had/have thousands crossing the border to have their children here so they can be citizens. As long as it is possible, they will continue to do so. Not sure what the best answer is there. It has always been a problem. They used to let the parents stay until the children turned 18 and then deport them. It just increased the number crossing the border to do the same. Now they are deporting some of the parents regardless and that is terrible for the children. Not sure what the best answer to that issue is...

>>>This is one of the more intelligent points raised. It would be a good step forward to amend the law to only confer citizenship on those born in the US to US citizens. Vacationers, those here on work visas and especially illegals should not expect US citizenship for children born here. Provision could easily be made that children born to those here legally and going through a citizenship process would automatically obtain citizenship with the naturalization of the parents.

>>>The current law is irrational and causes the problems you point out.
