a) to some extent the present, and to a great extent the future, of software usage will be on the internet and in the cloud.

b) the standards battle (MS vs. the rest of the world) is over, and the rest of the world won: proprietary standards for browsers are out, and W3C standards are in (with some qualifications, as in h.264, but MS is making that freely available).

c) tools are available to write to standards (and to check that you've written to standards)

Based on those three considerations alone, yes, writing to standards now is a good business decision.

>>>I have criticized Michel at times but he is off the hook here. As a one man band he should not be expected to support the newest browser, even if it comes from Google.
>>>
>>>>And my point is that if you want to write to web standards (which IE8 still sucks at), then Chrome is a good target. Write to the standards first, and then fill in the exceptions.

>>>>>That was not my point at all. My point was that if many sites do not support Firefox, it's not surprising that Chrome is not on the must-do list. And Michel is a one man shop. It's reasonable to give him a pass here.
>>>>>
>>>>>>Firefox usage has flatlined at 24% for the last 6 months. Chrome has risen from 3.9% to 6.7% in the same time period. Safari is stuck down around 4%.
>>>>>>
>>>>>>Chrome may be "fringe" in the sense that 6.7% isn't that much; but it's still #3 on the list, and has the best record of innovation and standards compatibility (with the possible exception of Opera) in the last 2 years.
