Hi Al

When I'd copied most of the folders that are needed from within DOS, one of the last was the datafiles folder in Outlook Express.

Part of the path was some jumble of random numbers, what a pain.

That got me to reminising of days gone by, and an absolute must have program of its time, Norton Commander for DOS.

Well, I found this Windows program that is similar: Windows Commander (now called Total Commander, Apparently Microsoft decided they didnt like anyone else to use the name Windows for their products-picky?), anyway there's and even better "tweaked" version (Ultima Prima) that adds tons of plugins on top of copying, moving, comparing files etc. including Zipping, converting music files, and a built-in FTP client.

So in the end when Paste isn't available this sort of program is very useful, at least to get the data off, I would have liked to have solved the problem on the machine, but as you say sometimes its best to just start again.

>If you've tried all 3 of the products you mentioned, and they didn't fix it, the only thing left is to reformat and reinstall everything from scratch. But if your customer has moved to a Mac and doesn't need to use the PC anymore, maybe you don't have to bother.

>>The only thing that I could do in the end was to go to DOS prompt & copy the files over using like you said XCOPY.

>>It would have been great to solve/remove whatever was blocking the paste function, but in the end using the old trusty DOS prompt did the job. I have used the DOS prompt in the past to delete pesky files that Windows Explorer refused to delete.

>>>Sounds like it's still infected with something.
>>>
>>>If you haven't tried it already, a few of my clients have been saved by the freely downloadable Malwarebytes' AntiMalware (MBAM): http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
>>>
>>>Some infected systems recognize it and won't let it run, in that case you can rename the setup file once downloaded or copied to the infected computer, run the setup, then rename the main MBAM .EXE file, then run that to get around the malware's recognition.
>>>
>>>Other things to try:
>>>
>>>- Boot the computer in Safe mode (press the F8 key periodically while the computer boots, then select Safe Mode from the boot menu. Safe Mode prevents various services etc. from starting, it may prevent some malware from starting as well, in which case regular copying via Windows Explorer might work
>>>
>>>- If the malware has infected explorer.exe (Windows' UI as well as file manager), you could try getting around that by copying using a CMD window (i.e. "DOS" box) and commands such as COPY and XCOPY
>>>
>>>- Yet another thing to try would be to boot as with Safe Mode above, but select "Safe Mode - command prompt only" which will prevent the UI loading. Try the "DOS" copy commands as above
