>>I have mixed feelings...on the one hand, the pitcher deserves a perfect game.
>>
>>On the other hand, the Phillies were screwed, and I mean SCREWED, out of a playoff win in 1977 against the Dodgers on a blown call at first base (similar situation...correct call, Phillies win). Yes, it was 33 years ago, but I still feel the anger. :)

>>And I'm sure Cardinals fans in 1985 remember Game 6 of the World Series...

>I tend to be in favor of instant replay. But I'm certainly not passionate about it. A couple of general comments.

>I heard a local sports radio show this morning complain that it would disrupt "the flow of the game." Sure, but so does a pitching change, injury pause, and a managerial tantrum. The game is (intentionally) slow enough than another temporary time out shouldn't be a problem.

>Using it only for fair/foul home run calls is about as stupid as you can get. I don't have statistics but my guess is that it happens fewer than 10 times a year total for all teams. (Probably a lot fewer than 10). Really.......what's the point?

>I've seen a lot of safe/out calls at the bases (steals, etc) where the replay is inconclusive. I don't mind leaving it to the umpire's judgement there. But, since the call at home is more significant, and happens frequently enough, I wouldn't mind having replay available for that specific call.

>But almost all the time the first base safe/out call becomes pretty obvious with Instant Replay. And if the call isn't obvious then the tie belongs to the runner. If you use Instant Replay at all, it seems to me to be a no-brainer that this is the first place it should be implemented.

They should also instant replay on some other sorts of calls too. I'm a Jays fan (naturally), but in the game against the Rays the other day, the Rays were robbed of a run on a missed base call by the ump. The runner did not miss third base, but the ump siad he did. On the replay it was pretty clear that his heel caught the bag. Or how about trapping calls. They could certainly benefit from replays.
