Friendship has no bearing. BP provides goods and services which are demanded by the developed world.

They've attempted a couple techniques to cap the well which have failed due to ice formation and the pressure of the flow. Now they are trying to limit the oil flowing into the Gulf by directing it to a tanker until the pressure can be lowered by the two planned relief wells.
