I would agree with your analogy to dBase II. But, I think it just shows that developing for the Web is still in its infancy. So, it seems really *basic*. No pun intended < g >. The relationship between tool sophistication and cross-platform support is inversely proportional--IMHO. Seems like there is some law of physics about this < s >.
P.S. If I'd been retaining what I read, I could probably help you more that refer to a book, too ;-)
