Besides the PCAnywhere problem, another situation which could cause the Invalid Seek Offset error message is a bad memory chip. It has happened to my clients in the past, but this time it actually happed to me last month on my own computer. One day, I started getting this error message on a random basis when running one of my VFP apps. I already applied the PCAnywhere patch, so I knew that wasn't the problem. At the same time, other applications would randomly GPF, but on a very infrequent basis. On a hunch, I ran the memory test in the new CheckIt98 program (highly recommended). Behold, one of the chips on the SIMM which was on the last slot of the last bank was bad (in only 8 address locations). I have 128 MB of RAM and this affected the memory around the 118 MB range. Most of the time, it did not affect my computer, since it was at the tail end of my memory range, but VFP uses all available memory by default, so it the Invalid Seek Offset error message showed up more frequently. I replaced the faulty SIMM and no more errors this month!

In summary, if you or your clients encounter the Invalid Seek Offset error message do the following...

1) Apply the Symantec patch if they are running PCAnywhere.
2) Test the RAM. One of the SIMMs, SDRAMs, etc. is likely bad.
