Since this should work, and since it doesn't I think what seems to be the problem probably isn't the problem. So, with that said, what could also be a problem are the indexes. I suggested deleting them (or the cdx file) and recreating them. Don't just do a reindex. The behavior you are experience sounds suspiciously like a bad index.
