Just as I was posting more stuff to look at :-)

What exactly was the error and where? I'm curious.

>OK. I got it figured out. In the professional jargon it came under the category of REALLY, REALLY STUPID CODING ERROR. But I probably would not have seen it as quickly except for your insightful analyses.

>>>Yep, it is on vacation. I wish I was.
>>>AllowAddNew is .F. because I do not want users adding records except through the external CommandButton for that purpose. This button works in that when pressed a new record is indeed added and certain fields are filled in correctly. The new record appears in the grid as expected -- iow, the grid's record source is updated correctly
>>>
>>>I have clicked on every part of the grid, including on the filled rows. It is acting as though it were disabled, but enabled is .T. in the watch window.
