I won't be arrogant enough to tell people what they should be interested in. (OK, I do that all the time, but generally only about music, books, and movies, trending to underappreciated geniuses). That said, your continued disinterest in soccer mystifies me. You are a thinking man and it is a thinking person's game. To boil it down to points scored is a little obtuse. Do you really need the constant sensation of results?
OK, I'll give it a rest. Please do me a favor and watch just one game and observe the action without an eye on the scoreboard. It really is a beautiful game. And much more athletic than your beloved NFL football, where they exert themselves in 10 second bursts and then huddle together for 30 seconds to talk about what they should do next. There are plans in soccer, too, but there is a lot more improvisational jazz.
Even for the horse race types, this is an interesting World Cup. There is no clear favorite. espn.com showed the predictions of a couple dozen soccer analysts and there must have been a half dozen different picks. Spain, Brazil, and Argentina featured, but what was striking was how much divergence there was. So watch it as a horse race.
Me? I am cheering for the U.S. team, of course, with no particular hope beyond the first round. England. Mexico, although their opening tie with lowly South Africa may not bode well. Italy, those crazy hormonals. And Brazil, the epitome of artistic soccer. If you want to watch something beautiful, watch the Brazilians play. You will be watching along with about 200 million Brazilians.
