>Uh, black Americans were not exactly willing immigrants.

I have no problem with black (or white or yellow or red or...) Americans.

When people of some other nationality (like African-American) try to pull phoney offense BS to see what $$ or leverage they can get in this country I say get the #$@# out.

>Bill, you really frustrate me sometimes. You are obviously an intelligent guy. You can speak amiably of certain things. We have even talked on the phone, and you seemed knowledgeable and on topic. Where the heck does all this unbounded anger come from?

>Let me venture a guess. You have a fixed idea of the United States of the 1950s, when we were on top of the world. And very white (including German immigrants, ahem). Times have changed. You're just going to give yourself a heart attack railing against the tides of time.

>This is not an attack. I like you well enough and in any case have a thick skin for curmudgeons <g>.

>Add Blackhawks -- the train home from work yesterday was packed, SRO with people returning from the victory parade. The crowd estimate was 2 million. Crowd estimates are notoriously inflated but without doubt there were a lot of people there. News reports said 20 deep, which is specific enough. On the train I talked for a while with a guy and his son, who appeared to be 6 or 7, who were on their way home. The kid was holding several copies of a sign that apparently was given away at the event. What a memory!

>Also a cool article in the Tribune about the aftermath of the win Wednesday night. Sounds like the players rode the high as long as they could. One scene is Jonathan Toews eating a late breakfast at a popular restaurant called Ann Sather's and signing autographs for anyone who asked for one, keeping any annoyance well hidden. Another scene at a private party at some bar downtown, fans kept away by bouncers. Some enterprising kids at the back door in the alley somehow got a message in that they just wanted to touch the cup. Brent Seabrook (I think it was him) brought it out and let them touch it. I don't know if this is traditional or not but every Blackhawks player is guaranteed custody of the cup for at least 24 hours this summer, to take wherever he likes. This includes one player from Eastern Europe.

>These guys are doing everything right. It's beyond winning a championship. They embody Chicago's punch-in-the-nose ethos and its love of heart. They own Chicago at the moment.
