But this is just silly. Whenever somebody makes a point about being a good Samaritan, people from the UT chatter forum chime up as if the commentator is anti-free market, anti-entrepreneur, anti-progress. Which may give an opportunity for sloganeering but prevents any sort of serious discussion.

To try to be very clear: I don't particularly care why the needy are needy. If it meets some need to say it's the needy's own fault, that doesn't change the point that we can afford to support people less capable or blessed than ourselves and should be willing to do so, just as we're willing to invest in insurance in the expectation that our fellows will support us to a far greater extent than our own contribution if the worst occurs. In particular I don't want to live in a society that creates an underclass of physically strong people with nothing to lose. I've said why before and IMHO it's a shame this sort of stuff has invaded the serious part of UT. So I'm going to say as you said earlier: this is my last word on the topic and I hope this stuff can be confined to chatter in future.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
