One thing I do if I ever do any free work is to invoice the client for the time I spent on it but include a credit for the time (so the net effective is the same). That way they see the value of what you're giving them and it helps them to understand that things like that have value and aren't normally "free". I also tend to do milestones and payments at each milestone (and make sure, based on the contract, that either party can cancel at any milestone - they must pay in full and I don't have any obligation to refund any money from previous milestones). That way I'm not assuming all of the risk.If either of us is unhappy it gives us an out (and hopefully w/o either of us feeling like we got screwed).
