The reason is plain: "Get proper duly capitalized file names". Since the application is deployed via Internet, I try to avoid dependancies as much as possible. This _comdlg looks like oldish code with dependancy on comdlg32.dll and msvcrt.dll.

The last crash I encountered, the "msvcrt.dll" was pointed out as the clue by VFP error handling. But that's all I get since this a API-related crash outside the interpreter tracind capabilities.

I'll try to but I need to take it out since it's fairly embedded in the code base. It's plain vanilla code.
