Thought of that, but the scanners at each station are used with other applications (some commercial). So doing this would prevent users from using the scanner to scan text into those applications.

Also, I have no control over the barcode. They are scanning part numbers and other information that suppliers put on incomming materials. To get all their suppliers to put a special character at the beginning and end of the barcode would be virtually impossible.
