What's the thinking about the water situation in Oz? Is there enough, or are imports in the future?

There's plenty of water up around Darwin but not enough in the populous lower fringes. In between is a flat and sparsely-populated desert. No doubt the bureaucrats will propose a desalination plant. ;-)

Meanwhile across the ditch, in the "other" Australian state (that, like Texas, had and still has the ability to join the Union) there is plenty of pristine water.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
