Most vendors of POS hardware will provide an ActiveX control to manage such devices. For example, I use Epson's receipt printers and they had a control available on their web site to download free. It came complete with a developer's guide (several guides actually). Their devices conform to OPOS standards established jointly by MS and the manufacturers/developers of the hardware.
