You need SQL Server Management Studio 2008. You can not connect to SQL Server 2008 using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio.
You can also connect to SQL Server 2005 using SSMS 2008. SSMS 2008 Express is a separate install.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
