>>>>>Wow! I was in Monterey, CA (DLI) during the Oct 89 quake. I watched the trees sway and the ground actually roll. No power for 3 days and spent those 3 days helping folks get out of destroyed homes, cars, and anyplace else they were when everything came tumbling down. My sister still lives in California but NOT ME. :o) (I was actually in the military dining facility when it struck and it was a modern bldg with all walls of glass - it was C R A Z Y!)

>>>hurricanes, yes. Tornadoes, no. Last tornado that hit moved at 50mph and by the time it was seen or caught on radar it had passed by already. I was actually watching the news at the time and no tornado warning yet. It hit a mile from me and sounded like a train was going through my building - it was a big and loud one. Came so fast the pipes were rattling for about 5 seconds (enough time to run to the bathroom but that's all). It damaged/destroyed some homes :( I can't imagine what it felt like even closer...

>>When I lived in Texas several years ago we had a tornado rip though our neighborhood. It actually hopped over our house - and then destroyed the 4500sq ft house across the street. - It ripped the whole front 1/2 of their house off and they found their refrigerator two blocks away 30 foot up in someones tree..and yes is was L O U D.

>It was a surprise because I've been near 3 tornados previously, but all in Wisconsin or the midwest. I guess it's been too many years because I didn't remember it being that loud! (Had a tornado touch down next to my house a couple of years ago but it was a small one and just sounded windy)

I imagine a lot of the noise would have to do with how big the thing is...and how much debris is in it.
