The windows firewalls are disabled on the both computers and on the other 2 (those that can connect) the firewall is enabled... so i don't think there is a firewall problem. We have writen the program so it makes a connection via SQLSTRINGCONNECT(). the connection string is in a init file so thats for every pc the same.

I just did the test with the odbc connection to see where the prob could be. when i make a connection with dynamic ip via tcp/ip for those 2 pcs i can't make a connection on the other 2 it works fine. when i chose to make a conneciton via tcp/ip and specify the port (1433) i get an instand connection so i guess the problem with the SQLSTRINGCONNECT() must be the same as the problem with the odbc connection.

So if possible i want to put the tcp port in my SQLSTRINGCONNECT() but i don't know if that is possible
