I think there is a property that you can check that says to "show network icon" on the tray toolbar. Sorry I don't remember exactly how my network icon got there. But I do remember that when I initially got my Win 7 computer I didn't see this icon either. When I go back to the computer (I ran around from one to another) I will check to see if I can find this property.
