I can now see why it is so difficult to get started with SharePoint. Well, since I am working only part-time right now, I probably won't have the funds to buy a new machine and install Windows Server, so I'll just study it and watch my www.Lynda.com SharePoint training videos in the meantime. You can install Visual Studio .NET in less than 30 minutes. You can usually install SQL Server in the same amount of time. But creating a SharePoint environment is more difficult.

There is a 3rd party tool you can use with Vista Pro or Windows 7 Pro that tricks SharePoint into thinking it's been installed on a server environment (by intercepting the installation) - but once again, it's more involved.
