>>>This is almost unbelievable.

>>>Only thing worse than men who savagely beat their wives is a govt that doesn't punish them.

>>You perhaps wanted to point out your finger on yet another barbaric Muslim country, but this is more general psychology issue.

>>After first beating where she ended up in hospital, guy was sentenced to 15 months in prison, but woman dropped charges
>>as he has 'shown remorse'... This is so common pattern that it is rarely even news worthy. Things like this are happening everywhere. (In US as well). What exactly is unbelievable here ??

>>Why are you posting this in govt/country context ?

>Sadly it does happen in all countries. When the victim refuses to cooperate, the legal system seldom proceeds simply because it is difficult to prosecute with an uncooperative victim. However, what is unusual is the rate. 4 in 10? I do not believe that is a common rate (thank goodness).

As I understood, original research was done by Turkish government, perhaps for reasons of helping/protecting those woman,
by rising awareness and creating legislation against it. When studies are made, then you have whole range of cases from those mild to very very serious cases.
But then comes CNN and (as they usually do) made it all sound as if 4 out of 10 woman in Turkey were walking around with bondage across their heads like this poor woman. (I can almost understand Kevin's compassionate reaction {g} )

To be fair, they reported it equally fiery, on another 4 out of 10 woman abuse story ;
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/07/31/military.sexabuse/index.html

I do not remember seeing any posts around here pointing to this back then.
