Just a thought, because it beat my brains out - make sure the there isn't some numlock thing toggled that is causing uiojklm,. keys to act like the numeric keypad. ( on my Dell it is Fn F4 )
Boot from a cd and you should be able to see the HD files. ( you can usually change boot order in the bios by going into setup on boot )
Or, remove hd and use a USB adapter ( about $20 if you don't have one) to plug the HD into another box as an auxiliary drive.
