He was hardly "just" a congressman. He had been one for 25 years and had been Minority Leader for 8. To me, that level of experience significantly exceeds both Obama's 4 years in the US Senate and 6 years in Illinois state legislature and the Village Idiot's 4 years as governor.

When Agnew was forced to resign (boy did we goof in 68) we had an office pool on whom Nixon would pick to become VP. My money was on Rockefeller and Ford was my second choice.

That may well be, but I like to think more highly of him. Considering what the nation had endured it was time to end "our long national nightmare" and pursuing Nixon further would have served no real purpose other than to let the attack dogs have their day.
