To add the "old style" .asmx web references, in Step 2 of your listed steps, the "Add Service Reference" dialog, choose the "Advanced" button at the bottom left ... this will bring up another dialog ("Service Reference Settings"), and at the bottom of that dialog, there's a section titled "Compatibility" and an "Add Web Reference" button which will pop up yet another dialog that will look familiar ... here's where you can add the .asmx web reference the old way. This is probably what you want to do.
