From what I have heard, the situation in Egypt improved... a bit. It used to be the case that Bahá'ís couldn't get their ID paper, because they had to specify a religion, and only three religions were "officially recognized" (Muslims, Christians, Jews). In theory this could have affected people of other religions as well, such as Zoroastrians or Buddhists, as well as atheists. I am not sure to what extent it actually did affect others.
Now there is a kind of compromise solution, where people who are not of one of those three religions can put a dash instead of their religion. In other words, other religions are still not "officially recognized", but at least people can now get their IDs.
