Off the top of my head I believe this is due to using ClearType to "smooth the edges of screen fonts", but I may be mixing this up with something else.

Basically go into the Advanced section of the Appearance Tab of the Display Properties and either uncheck "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" or change it from ClearType to Standard.
