>IF your daughter got an abortion, would you have been concerned about the message it sends to her? Everybody knows where babies come from. Everybody needs to know consequences to their actions without getting a get-out-of-jail free card. We've got a current generation of patsies that don't know what real consequences are.

The first problem I have with that is not everyone does have a good understanding of where babies come from. They are getting started younger and younger. (So I hear). There are also more aware women who do not want a baby yet and think they are taking proper precautions, and get pregnant anyway. I don't think it's my place or yours or anyone else's to tell them what they must do.

Here is an example from personal experience. One of the smartest women I have ever known was going out with my roommate but we always had an emotional connection. You don't make overtures with your roommate's significant other, you just don't, so nothing happened other than a lot of memorable conversations. After college she let me know she and he had broken up. Of course I was Johnny on the spot. We spent a night together in a hotel after my best friend's wedding. It was the proverbial night where you keep each other awake all night and talk about anything and everything. Somehow the topic came to abortion. In all honesty I do not remember how it came up. I asked her if she would. "As a matter of fact I would," she said. "As a matter of fact I did." She said her diaphragm didn't do the job and she wound up pregnant as a sophomore in college. She said that was the last thing I needed, back home with mom and dad and a baby. It was no get out of jail free card for her. She said I think about that baby who wasn't all the time. She finished her education, got a great job, met a great guy and married him. They have four daughters who are probably all grown by now. My point is that it is a complex issue men don't always understand. It's her choice. The word "choice" is not an idle one.
