It is a question of protection under the law. In Saudi Arabia, women need their guardian's permission for most medical treatment and elective surgery. They cannot even drive cars or travel without a male guardian. The maid was not allowed to roam freely around the country to see a doctor or to leave.

Religion is just a means to an end to them. It's still essentially a feudal society with far too much money and supported by the US. A disgrace really.
