>>>>>>>Why didn't you answer my simple question? What has religion got to do with this? Or do you mean that since this happened in Sri Lanka, the people involved had to belong to Islam? AFAIK Charles Manson lived in California, so using the same reasoning, you must sympathize with him?
>>>>>>
>>>>>>Not jumping into this discussion other than to clarify for lurkers - it happened in Saudi Arabia, not Sri Lanka. She returned to Sri Lanka and went to the hospital there for treatment.
>>>>>>
>>>>>>I think, if you know anything about Saudi Arabia, that is clear enough... there's a 3% chance that the family was not Muslim... but still possible. More concerning is not the religion but the law which does not guarantee freedom of religion (or none thereof) nor does it give rights to or protect women and children.

>>>Totally irrelevant in this case. Does the article say that these people were allowed to hammer the nails into her? The thing is that since this happened in a country where most people have a certain religion, the religion itself is to blame?
>>
>>Tore, surely you realize that in Saudi Arabia - as the Saudis will be the first to tell you - *everything* has to do with religion. There are probably very few countries of the world where this is true, but if there is one, SA is certainly it. (not to say that every outrage would be condone by every Saudi, every Muslim or every imam, but in SA, as Tracy points out, the legal system, customs and religion are inextricably intertwined.)
>
>Agreed, but again: it's irrelevant in this case! Even if "everything" has to do with religion in some countries, it doesn't mean that there are no crazy people in these countries. And if these crazy people commits a serious crime, it's by no means justifiable to blame the religion for their crime.

Fair enough. I see your point. Though the complexion of local crazy is sometimes culturally influenced ( or at least we've seen that with "Christians" here ) I guess it doesn't cause the crazy, just put a coloring on how it is expressed and maybe helps to target victims.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
