Are you active in the Atlanta Ruby users group?


They have just started up a Ruby group here in Birmingham about 3 months ago. I've been twice and have a a good time learning something new. They clain to be planning a short Ruby / Rails conference here in Birmingham in December. (2-Day Friday + Saturday) I'll keep the details posted here in case you are interested.
