To add to what the others have said, a manager from Novell spoke at the DevLink conference and I attended his session.
1. Unlike Mono, MonoTouch is a commercial project and is not free. Pricing starts a $399/developer.
2. MonoTouch requires the Apple SDK, which only runs on a Mac. If you want to do iPhone/iPad development, you need a Mac.
3. The Object C thing is a licensing controversy, but Novell contends that MonoTouch does not break the rules. They are admittedly in a grey area, so see their web site and decide for yourself. Novell says at least a few apps written in MonoTouch have been approved since the new rules went into place.
4. My memory gets a little fuzzy here, but he said something to the effect that iPad development is harder than iPhone. I don't know if he meant that in general, or if MonoTouch was more geared towards the phone and has some catching up to do.
5. You don't have to use the app store, but Apple doesn't make it easy. See
