>>>>>>Really? I will take your word for it but "smarter than she" sounds a little arch.

>>>No, but the sentence implies it and that is what is taught as the way to remember which is correct. The comparison of "He is smarter" is compared to the noun clause, not to the person. It's a quibble and in speech I often say "He's faster than me." just because it is common usage and if you hadn't shown yourself to be passionate on the subject of good writing by criticizing others' grammatical errors and correcting spelling and punctuation I would never have brought it up <g>.

>>OK, now I see where you are coming from. If I was a pedant on the grammar of others then I deserve the criticism. When it comes to strict grammar rules I am like you, a democrat ;-) In fact I seem to remember defending one of the non-American members of the UT just the other day, saying give the guy a break, his meaning was clear.
>>
>>Sincerely, point taken. And can we just drop it? Life is short enough already without people who have been friends shooting arrows back and forth.

>yeah, I really was pretty much kidding. It's an area of grammar I don't care much about one way or the other and when I hear it or say it it doesn't stick in the ear.
>
>HOWEVER don't ever say "Try and" when you mean "Try to"
>
>THAT is grounds for throttling. <g>

I will try and remember that ;-)

The other one that gets me is misplaced apostrophes. You see them actually on people's houses. The Watson's.
