On my machine a Windows 7 disk defrag schedule was set by windows itself even though I never use the Windows built in defragger. I have been using the free Defraggler (http://www.piriform.com/) which is lightweight and easy to use.

Check your machine like this:

1) Right click “Computer” icon on the desktop and go to properties

2) In the center dialog it has a hyperlink called Windows Experience Index. Click this (I’m sure there is another way to this but this is the way I found).

3) On the left panel choose Advanced Tools

4) On the new list look near the bottom for Open Disk Defragmenter. Click that.

5) On this dialog use the button to mange the schedule. Switch on/off/change as desired.

I think it is better to run a defrag when I want to.

I have also found a way to clean up disk space like this:

1) Go back to step 3 above and choose Open Disk Cleanup

2) Choose system drive (e.g. C)

3) On the next dialog click the Clean Up System Files – this will reload this program.

4) Choose drive C again.

5) In the list of files that can be cleaned up you will find the item for the old Vista files that have been replaced by Windows 7

6) You can save a lot of space by getting rid of this provided you are sure your new Windows 7 system is (a) stable and (b) you have all your own personal stuff working. If that is all OK then I saved 2Gb of disk space by dropping that puppy.

7) If your Windows system is stable and all cool then you could also delete the Windows Upgrade Log Files. They are apparently only needed when you are having a problem with prior upgrades and updates.
