I am not saying companies can't lose market share. They can and those are two examples. (I worked in one office in the 1980s that used WordPerfect and hated it with a passion. The strange hot keys alone were enough to drive you insane). I believe Apple is a bit different. They have been dominant in the music player business. They are dominant with the iPhone. The iPad is off to the races with 2 or 3 million in sales in just a few months. Maybe someone will catch them but they have some serious catching up to do.
In my just completed consulting job the best developer there was a guy who immigrated here from the Ukraine. He speaks nearly perfect English. (OK, there was another guy just as good, a Russian immigrant who got his PhD in comp sci from Northwestern). He has been working on an iPad app for the sales force. He started out skeptical and became a true believer. At lunch last week he said he hasn't turned on his laptop at home since being issued the development iPad.
