having seen the problems with encryption implementations discussed on the web, I took the chicken way out: I use an encryption activex control from chilkatsoft.com. There are cheaper ways (although the developer pack, which includes activex and .Net versions, contains a lot of very useful controls and is pretty reasonably priced), but when dealing with things like encryption or ftps, both of which I use in a line-of-business app, I wanted something that I didn't have to maintain.
