>The blog post Hank linked to implied Silverlight is on the chopping block along with WPF. The last I knew the two were supposedly going to converge, one for the web and one for the desktop. It makes you a little dizzy sometimes trying to keep up.

The argument now seems to be HTML5 or Silverlight. IE9 will support HTML 5 and all of its new features which is interesting.... yet HTML5 isn't mature enough to replace Silverlight (yet).

After all of the hubbub over Scott's posts, I think it is safe to say that WPF will be around for awhile (now) because the user base out there for WPF and Silverlight far outnumbers VFP even during its heydays. Enough stuff was stirred up so that MSFT will probably put out a few more updates to WPF before really putting it on the back burner...

Then Silverlight is another story....probably a MUCH longer lifetime than WPF, but how long?

I guess if we were to "GUESS' what MSFT will do, all we would have to do is look at where will its next market be and where will the real $ income for them come from? If you believe the OS will still be the money maker, look at technologies they will promote in that area. If you think internet/intranet - look at technologies in that area.

Or leave MSFT entirely.....(right now there are businesses who stuck with MSFT technology seriously considering a departure and these are businesses that would never consider open source previously)

In all fairness, if you consider Silverlight, consider some of the Silverlight posts:

There are plenty of Silverlight vs HTML5 articles out there too.
