It means they can "upgrade" their cpu without having to purchase a new one and pay for installation, lose time turning their pc into a shop to be upgraded or sending it back to the manufacturer to do so and hope they get their data back when it returns. Lower income folks can purchase the system with it locked and then later have it unlocked. It would be nice if they could actually start with a low-end chip and end up with a high-end chip actually (not just more threads and cache)...

For lower income folks, is there any reason why they shouldn't get the higher-performance chip right from the start? It doesn't cost any more to supply the computer "unlocked" - in fact, since it's more complicated to design a locking/unlocking mechanism, that actually increases the cost. IOW they should be able to sell an unlocked computer cheaper than a locked, but upgradeable, one.

Then, assuming you've got nothing against higher income folks, shouldn't they get those same benefits, too? < g >
