Usually I'd say, do it as Naomi described it. But I don't know how you want to handle further input.
So, a shape behind your transparent textbox might be an option. However, you would have to calculate the width of your shape and its left offset relative to your textbox. I don't know if this is such a good idea at all.
Alternatively you could handle it with a grid just below your textbox and populate the cursor with all the records, that still match your textbox.value.
