This is exactly the kind of insecure elitist nonsense I'm objecting to. Don't you think it is possible that someone may take a political stand different from the Vision of the Anointed because of a genuine, informed difference of opinion or political philosophy and not through a lack of education or intelligence? ( while that is certainly not to say that those on the right are any more likely to be smarter or better just because of the positions they adopt )

It is the smug self-identification of the Left as smarter, better people that is so offensive , comparable to characterization by the righteously holy in non-secular religions being offensive in their implication that those who do not share their revelation are evil, blind, or less ethical.

Part of this is due to the nature of academia and the striving to think of oneself as not just correct (when often that would be a matter of actually defending ideas) but as "better" and "smarter" through identification with those perceived as defining those traits. It is an example of the kind of lemming-like group-think that is dangerous on any side of a political spectrum.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
