By default, newer MS OSs (Vista, 7, Server 2008/R2) will use the new SMB2 networking protocol when communicating amongst themselves. XP/Server 2003 and previous use the older SMB (now sometimes called SMB1).

There is a confirmed bug with SMB2 that can cause data corruption with file-server databases such as VFP and MS Access: Thread#1440085. At this point the chances of this bug being fixed are not looking good.

If your workstations are connecting to a Server 2008 server, the XP workstations will not be affected because they will communicate using SMB1, but a new Win7 workstation will by default use SMB2 and could be affected.

As a workaround, SMB2 can be disabled on workstations and/or servers, but my understanding is that some functions Server 2008 domains depend on SMB2 so will not work properly if it's disabled.

This is definitely something to be aware of, as users transition to networks running SMB2 by default.
