>>>>>>>This gizmo is cool. Very easy on the eyes and a very well designed interface. And it only cost 10 times what I would ever spend on a pair of sunglasses <g>
>>>>>>
>>>>>>Yep, just got mine yesterday as well. Much better than trying to read a book on my Android phone.I bought the leather cover with it but I actually like reading with it out of the cover (since the cover is fairly heavy).
>>>>>
>>>>>As you may know there is a nice, free utility Calibre which will convert epub and just about anything else to the MOBI format Kindle likes. PDFs seem to display better as pdf than after conversion, but this is a must for the epub format (lots of free stuff out there in epub)
>>>>>
>>>>>$139 is definitely a winning price-point and I like this one a lot more than my sister's Kindle2.

>>>>>I have been told you can use it as a browser - have you figured that out ?
>>>>
>>>>Agreed on all points with both you and Paul. But will you fall in love with the iPad? ;-) IMO that is a seriously game changing device (as is the Kindle). I recently finished working with some straight down the middle corporate developers, not wild embracers of new technology by any means or Apple fans, and they loved their iPads once they were given one. One of them, a guy named Alex who immigrated here from the Ukraine and is maybe the best developer I have ever met, said I haven't turned on my laptop at home since. Is this a great country or whut? ;-) (channeling Bill Clinton)
>>>
>>>I would love any toy somebody *gave* me. would I spend my own money on a technology Steve Jobs has locked down - no. I have a laptop about the size of an iPad with more memory, more speed, more apps etc. and I don't need permission from Apple to modify it or develop software for it. Jobs is a wizard at selling apps duplicating functionality already available on the web and getting the koolaid drinkers to applaud. great for Apple shareholders.
>>>
>>>The Kindle isn't competing with iPad. If all I want to do is read on it, the iPad is too big and too reflective. If I want a laptop, I use a laptop. The touchscreen thing gets old for me in about 5 minutes.
>>>
>>>But if somebody wants to give me one I'll love it.
>>>
>>>Toys are cool. But owning one doesn't make somebody cool <g> no matter what TBWA/Chiat/Day says.
>>
>>I couldn't agree with you any more. BTW, I've been holding out for one of these, http://www.exopc.com/en/exopc-slate.php
>>
>>It's a fully functioning PC running a full OS so and it will let me do pretty much anything I can do now on my desktop/notebook/netbook.

>I remember the first posts on these and they do look cool ( though the details we kind of sketchy then) Has anyone actually bought/even seen one?
>
>The Engaget review looks pretty positive. I would certainly buy one over an iPad sight unseen just on specs. (and Joblessness <bg> )
>
>Wonder how much weight it would add if they just had a hinged cover for the screen - with a keyboard on it <s>

I pre-ordered it and I should be able to get it mid october. I'll post about it later.
